What Makes You Beautiful Activity

So I found this super cute video on youtube, a lipsync version of "What Makes You Beautiful" by the Young Men in the stake that they made for the girls to watch at camp.  I loved the message and the idea that what makes our girls beautiful is their desire to do right.  So I based this whole activity on this concept and also the 13th Article of Faith.  We have a couple of girls turning 12 this year and this fulfills one of the requirements for Preparing for Young Women.

This video is on youtube.  There are several other versions-all of them are great!  This one didn't have as many buffering issues!

First of all, we talked about what beauty is.  What did the girls think was beautiful?  What does the world think is beautiful?  How are they different?  I read them this quote:

You can find the beautifulquote  here.  It is a jpg of two sized for 81/2x11.

Then we split into two groups.  One group worked on this questionnaire:
You can find this mirror printable here.

The second group made this tiara.  It is printable!  We just cut them out and then added some adhesive rhinestones where ever they wanted.

You can find the tiara printable here.

Then we took a picture in the "beauty booth".  I just took a trifold display board, like for science fairs, but it was PINK!  (Hobby Lobby, if you want to know where I got it.)  I simply added the caption  Be-"You"-Tiful and then the attributes listed in the 13th article of faith.  Here are a couple of shots of my own girls.

We finished the evening off by watching the video and choosing some treats from our candy bar-I labeled several different treats with "praiseworthy", "of good report", "virtuous", etc.

They took their treats home in these little takeout boxes I ordered a million years ago and hadn't used yet.  They are small, so it wasn't like they took home a ton of candy.  I just taped on a little label found here with some cute washi tape.  Easy peasy.  BTW, there are some other super cute printables of the 13th article of faith at that site.

My awesome partner brought some cupcakes as well, but you could just do the candy bar.  I like the idea of choosing/seeking after--you could do a much bigger display than we did.  It was a simple activity that got the girls thinking about something important with a little bit of fun.  Enjoy!

Springtime Fun and Games

image from makeit-loveit.com
We decided to do a quick craft and a review of the Articles of Faith before spring break.  So, my trusty co-leader found this great craft at make it -love it that would be quick and simple.  Basically all you need are paper towels, food coloring, water, and chenille stems. You fold the paper towel in half, four times.  This makes 16 sections, unfolded.  Then you dip a corner into four different colors of dye.  Repeat with each corner.  Unfold and let dry.  Then fold it accordion style, pinch in middle and twist a chenille stem around it to create the antennae.  Super cute and easy!

We also tied in a springy review of the A of F by doing an easter egg hunt.  I found this great idea here at a bushel and a peck.

BTW, this is a fabulous site with some super cute ideas and printables!  I don't know how she has time to do all that designing and creating, but I love it all!  We filled a whole bunch of eggs with candy and half of them also had cut up sections of Articles of Faith in them.  I chose to just do 8-13, since that is what we needed to review.  You can pick and choose, or do all of them!  While Sister S. was working with half the girls on the craft, I reviewed the A of F verbally with the other half.  Then we switched.  I went outside and hid the eggs about 5 minutes before everyone was finished.  We let them loose to find the eggs and then they got to eat their candy and try to find the rest of the pieces of their Article of Faith.  It was fun and made them think hard about the individual phrases of the Article of Faith.  We finished with a spring cookie treat and a robust game of tag!  Thank goodness it is getting warm!  12-15 girls in my living room is a little nuts!  Enjoy!

Article of Faith "TREASURE BOX "

This Treasure box works wonders in getting the girls to learn their articles of faith- We have 13 bags of goodies inside- numbered 1-13 when they pass of their articles of faith they get to choose from the Treasure box, according to the number they passed off. We started off with smaller cheaper things for number one and went up in prizes as we went. We used things like erasers, pencils, different candies, dollar store finds, (cheap)necklaces, bracelets, and other things that the girls would like and when they learned all 13 they got a BIG candy bar. (which was bought on sale) It really helps the girls to want to learn and pass off things. Make an article of faith bag which has all sorts of games, puzzles, and things that help them pass off their "Articles of Faith". It will help them to be regular in studying ..... GOOD LUCK!

Articles of Faith

Submitted by Kari

We have a few girls that really work on their Articles of Faith, but most don't at all. I decided to work on the 13th with them. If they can get that one passed off, they'll feel like they can pass off any of them!

I made word strips to stick to the board with push pins. After reading through it a few times together, we took turns rolling a big dice and took that many words off the board. We went through until everyone had a turn. (I usually only have about 10 kids there.) After this part of the activity, I had Ziploc bags with word strips for each child in them. I copied them all on different colors of paper, so everyone had their own color. I gave them a few minutes to pick a spot on the floor and try to put the Article of Faith in order on their own. Some worked together and that was fine too. Most did pretty well. Some wanted to pass it off that evening, but I told them they needed to wait and do it on Sunday to make sure they really knew it. They were able to take their word strips home to practice. About half were able to pass if off on Sunday.

Easter and Articles of Faith

Here's a great idea that combines Easter and the 13 Articles of Faith!

Articles of Faith

In order to encourage our girls to memorize all 13 Articles of Faith this year we have come up with a system that seems to be working great!

Each girl has one of these papers that they keep in their folder: Each month we focus on one A of F and we try our hardest to get them to memorize the one for that month. When we hand out the reminder/flyer for the the first activity of the month we make sure to mention something about memorizing that particular Article of Faith. If they come to the FIRST activity of the month with it memorized we reward them with something small. (i.e., one fun size candy, one Red Vine, etc. Nothing extravagant.) We encourage them to work on it for next time but there is no reward for the second activity. There is also the rule that they have to have it fully memorized! No forgetting, looking in the book and starting all over again! It's amazing how well they are doing and how many of them are passing them off.

UPDATE: As requested, I have made this available for download here.
